Why Rent in Winnipeg Is Starting to Feel Impossible for Me

Anonymous residents share real experiences about rent in Winnipeg, work, and everyday life in the city.

I’ve lived in Winnipeg most of my life. For a long time, one of the things people always said about the city was that it was still affordable compared to other places in Canada.
Lately though, it doesn’t really feel that way anymore.
When I first moved into my apartment a few years ago, the rent in Winnipeg felt manageable. I could pay my bills, buy groceries, and still have a little left over. Over time though, the rent has gone up, and so has pretty much everything else.
Groceries cost more. Utilities cost more. Even basic things like transportation feel more expensive than they used to.
What really hits is that wages don’t seem to go up at the same speed.
I’m not saying Winnipeg is the most expensive city in Canada, because it obviously isn’t. But when you’re actually living here and trying to balance a paycheck with rent and everyday expenses, it can still feel overwhelming.
Sometimes I catch myself wondering how people who are just starting out are managing it.
I still like Winnipeg. My friends and family are here. But the idea that it’s automatically an affordable city doesn’t feel as true as it used to.
