What Commuting Across Winnipeg Feels Like in Winter

Story
I’ve lived in Winnipeg long enough that winter commuting feels normal to me now, but it definitely takes some getting used to.
When people hear you live in Winnipeg, they usually joke about the cold. The cold is real, but what people don’t always realize is how much winter changes everyday routines.
For me, commuting is where you really notice it.
Some mornings it starts before you even leave the house. You check the weather and the road conditions to see what you’re dealing with that day. If it snowed overnight, you already know the drive or bus ride might take longer.
The roads can get slow, and traffic moves differently in winter. Even on days when the streets are cleared, people drive more carefully, which means everything takes a bit longer.
When I take the bus, there are times when schedules get delayed because of snow or icy roads. Standing outside waiting in the cold is probably the hardest part.
But at the same time, most people in Winnipeg are used to it. Everyone seems to understand that winter just changes how the day works.
After a while, you start planning for it without even thinking about it. Leaving earlier, checking the forecast, making sure you’re dressed for the weather.
It’s just part of living here.
