What Triggered the Latest U.S. Iran Conflict

Recent military action between the United States, Israel, and Iran has dramatically escalated into what many sources describe as an active conflict. On February 28, the U.S. and Israel launched coordinated strikes on targets across Iran, targeting leadership figures, military infrastructure, and nuclear-related facilities.

This offensive, which both governments have described as necessary to address perceived nuclear and missile threats, resulted in the confirmed death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who led the country for nearly four decades. Iran announced a period of mourning and acknowledged the strike and the loss.

These strikes were part of a broader operation known in Israel as “Operation Lion’s Roar.”

Iran has responded with widespread missile and drone attacks against U.S. and Israeli military bases and installations across the region, including in Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and elsewhere. Iraqi militia groups have also claimed drone attacks targeting U.S. forces.

U.S., Israel and Iran Conflict has produced significant disruptions to shipping in the Gulf. Several tankers have been damaged amid heightened risks around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil exports. One crew member on a commercial vessel was killed, and many ships have rerouted their journeys to avoid danger.

There are confirmed U.S. military casualties. The U.S. military has reported three American service members killed and five seriously wounded during the current phase of operations. U.S. officials have said the campaign may continue for weeks.

The conflict has affected international travel. Many flights have been canceled or rerouted due to closed airspace and safety concerns in the Middle East, complicating travel plans for airlines and passengers worldwide.

International reactions have been mixed. The United Nations Security Council held emergency discussions, with the U.N. secretary-general urging restraint. European countries have called for respect for international law and civilian protections, and regional actors like Saudi Arabia have taken diplomatic steps in response.

This remains a fluid and rapidly evolving situation. On-the-ground reports, official government statements, and independent media continue to update as events unfold. Reliable news sources are the best way to follow developments as they happen.
