Why Is My CRA Payment Late This Month?

If you’re waiting on a CRA payment that usually arrives on time, a delay can be stressful. Many Canadians check their bank account expecting a benefit or credit, only to find nothing there. In most cases, a late CRA payment has a straightforward explanation.

CRA payments can be delayed for a few common reasons. One of the most frequent is a processing review. This happens when the CRA needs to confirm information on your tax return, benefit eligibility, or personal details. Even small changes, like a new address or marital status update, can temporarily pause payments.

Another reason is timing. If a scheduled payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deposit may arrive on the next business day. While it usually shows up early, that is not guaranteed every time.

Banking issues can also play a role. Direct deposit changes, closed accounts, or incorrect banking details can prevent payments from going through. In these cases, the CRA may issue a paper cheque instead, which takes longer to arrive.

It’s also worth checking your CRA online account. Messages or notices often appear there before any mail is sent. If there is an issue with your account, the CRA will usually flag it there first.

If your payment is only a few days late, it’s often best to wait briefly and monitor your CRA account. If the delay continues and no explanation appears, contacting the CRA directly may be the next step.
